My name is Bill and I’m an ex-smoker. I've been an ex-smoker for about 15 years at this point. I remember when I was younger and the first time I ever flew on an airplane larger than a 2-seater. In my case, I didn't fly young, and I never flew as a child or teen, as many people do.I actually was married and had three children, and it was our first trip to Disney World. That was the first time I was actually on a commercial jet.
I remember at the time while flying from New York to Florida, that ahead of time, I was very anxious. I wanted a cigarette. I got to the airport and they didn't allow smoking anywhere in the airport. That fed my anxiety and made it really bad for me inside.
Next, we had to wait for a period of time because it was actually in March, and I think they had some icing conditions, and a few things that delayed the plane, which fed my anxiety because I couldn't smoke,
Then when we got on the plane and it was all new to me, taking off, the whole thought about flying, it all made me very anxious and all I did is to think about how I wanted a cigarette - and I couldn't.
This fed my anxiety the entire trip. All I thought about was “Why can't I have a cigarette? I really need a cigarette” You probably can see the pattern here, and you probably have been there as well. You have felt what I felt.
Around that period of time, several of the airports in Florida had smoking areas, so that cut a little time off my suffering, but those closed up soon after. It was really difficult to take a commercial flight without smoking, and considering the time you had to wait ahead of the flight, during the flight, and after we landed, not being able to smoke just made me miserable. It became much worse than it should have been.
It would be a great idea to learn how to stop smoking on an airplane!
While I should have just been excited about a trip to Disney World with my family, because I still needed to stop smoking, I lost my Disney focus and instead just focused on craving a cigarette. It’s sad when you step back and think about it.
Another “smoker’s surprise” I had was I that when you smoke, you are much more congested than non-smokers, so as the pressure changes in the plane, such as when taking off and landing, wow did my ears hurt! Because of the congestion, when we were in flight, and especially when we landed, I remember it being excruciating. I just wanted the plane to land it really hurt.
On subsequent flights, when I was a smoker I always ended up having to take some kind of decongestant ahead of time. Anytime I got on the plane just to try to help dry me up, plus it helped to chew gum, but it still was a problem.
I will tell you once I became a non-smoker, and I have flown a number of times since (I was actually on a plane less than a month ago and I didn't even bother with gum) it is now just a non-issue. The congestion is not there after you stop smoking. Obviously, you feel better. There are a thousand reasons why you should consider to stop smoking, but certainly, when it comes to flying in an airplane it's much better to be a non-smoker than a smoker.
Cigarettes were just no longer in my vocabulary and what a difference it made. Not to mention I felt better. I breathed better. I could stand longer. All the good things that you know will come when you quit smoking. You will just feel like a different person.
So if you need to, or want to quit smoking on an airplane, I would like to tell you that 15 years ago when I quit smoking, one thing I did a little uniquely is at the time, I documented everything I did to prepare ahead of time, and what I did at the point I was going to quit. I documented how I felt after quitting smoking.
